AAA Travel Advantage is a strong no-fee default for standard gas stations and eligible EV charging, earning 5% on up to $7,000 each calendar year. Costco Anywhere Visa is the better fit for Costco fuel, while Citi Custom Cash can earn 5% on up to $500 each billing cycle when gas is your top eligible category.

Can earn 5% when gas stations are your highest eligible category, on up to $500 each billing cycle, then 1%. Warehouse and superstore fuel can be excluded.
Decision rules
- Use Costco Anywhere Visa when Costco gas is your normal stop and you already keep a Costco membership.
- Dedicate Citi Custom Cash to gas only when your monthly fuel spending and other eligible categories make that strategy predictable.
- Confirm that the issuer explicitly includes EV charging; a category described only as gas stations may not.
- Once a cap is reached, calculate the blended return and move additional spending to another gas or flat-rate card.
Common traps
- Gas rewards follow merchant coding. Fuel sold by a supermarket, superstore, convenience store, or warehouse club may be excluded.
- Costco Anywhere's elevated rate applies specifically to Costco gas and eligible gas or EV merchants—not every warehouse-club pump.
- Reward caps reset on different schedules: monthly billing cycle, calendar quarter, or calendar year depending on the card.
- Costco rewards are generally delivered as an annual certificate rather than immediately available cash back.
Why the station matters
A pump attached to a supermarket can look like an ordinary gas station but code as the supermarket or superstore. A 5% gas card may then earn only its base rate. Choose the merchant in SwipeCue when known, and check the posted category after your first small purchase.
Questions people actually ask
Does Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart, or supermarket gas earn bonus rewards?
It depends on the card and merchant coding. Costco Anywhere Visa specifically earns its highest rate at Costco gas. Citi lists supermarket, superstore, and non-Costco warehouse gas among exclusions from its elevated Costco-card rate, and other issuers have similar limitations.
Do EV-charging purchases count as gas?
Only when the issuer includes them. AAA Travel Advantage and Costco Anywhere Visa explicitly cover eligible EV charging. Do not assume a card described only as rewarding gas stations also rewards charging.
