Editorial methodology

How SwipeCue chooses the best card

The ranking starts with the cards you already carry and the estimated net value of the specific purchase—not commissions or application payouts. Limited editorial priorities can also affect the order where unpriced protection or direct hotel-brand context matters.

The formula

Net value = rewards + eligible unused credits − fees

Displayed net value is the baseline, not the only sorting signal. SwipeCue prioritizes modeled rental-car protection, a matching hotel co-brand card at its own hotel, and fee-reimbursing debit cards for international cash. Confirm merchant and card-network acceptance separately.

Ranking process

1. Confirm eligibility

SwipeCue checks the purchase category, selected merchant, domestic or foreign processing, published eligibility rules, and whether you marked a credit used. It cannot verify enrollment or activation; confirm those with the issuer.

2. Convert rewards to dollars

Points earned are multiplied by the editorial point-value estimate shown in Wallet. The underlying multiplier and value stay visible so you can judge the estimate against redemptions you actually make.

3. Add usable credits

An eligible statement credit is included only when it applies to the purchase and has not been marked used. Restricted credits are not treated as universal cash.

4. Subtract fees

Foreign transaction fees and modeled ATM costs reduce the result. Annual fees are shown separately and are not allocated to one purchase because SwipeCue compares cards you already own.

5. Surface protection tradeoffs

Where the catalog models a protection difference—such as rental-car coverage—SwipeCue surfaces it alongside value because it can matter more than a small points advantage.

Sources and updates

  • Issuer pages, rewards agreements, and benefit terms are the primary sources.
  • Guide pages show their review date and link to the material issuer sources.
  • SwipeCue does not use affiliate links in its guide recommendations.
  • Confirmed material errors are corrected and the affected page is reviewed again. Read the correction policy.

What the model cannot guarantee

Merchant-category coding, issuer enforcement, targeted offers, and benefit eligibility can differ by transaction. Point values are estimates, not fixed prices. Confirm expensive or unusual purchases against current issuer terms.

Rewards are valuable only when they are not overwhelmed by interest, fees, or overspending. Paying a balance in full and on time generally matters more than optimizing a category bonus.
