The short answer
For frequent Booking.com users, the no-annual-fee Booking.com Genius Rewards Visa has the strongest platform-specific headline return: 6% in Travel Credits on stays booked in the app and 5% on other Booking.com travel. If you want flexible rewards instead, Wells Fargo Autograph earns 3× on travel agencies and discount travel sites, while Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 2× on other travel.

What to use—and when
Best Booking.com-specific return
Booking.com Genius Rewards Visa
Earns 6% in Booking.com Travel Credits on stays booked in the app and 5% on other Booking.com travel, with no annual fee. The credits fund future Booking.com reservations rather than cash back.
Best flexible no-fee fallback
Wells Fargo Autograph
Earns unlimited 3× on travel, including travel agencies and discount travel sites, with no annual or foreign transaction fee.
Best transferable-points fallback
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Booking.com generally falls under its 2× other-travel category. Ultimate Rewards can be more useful than platform credits if you transfer points strategically.
Decision rules
- Use an eligible unused travel credit before optimizing a modest rewards difference.
- Treat Booking.com Travel Credits as restricted value: they are strongest only when you expect to book through Booking.com again.
- Compare third-party-booking rewards with hotel points, elite-night credit, status recognition, and flexibility you may sacrifice by not booking direct.
- For a foreign-processed charge, use a card with no foreign transaction fee and pay in the property's local currency when offered.
Common traps
- Sapphire Reserve's 4× hotel category applies to hotels booked directly; a Booking.com charge ordinarily does not qualify for that multiplier.
- Hotel-chain points, elite-night credit, upgrades, and status benefits are often unavailable or not guaranteed on third-party bookings.
- A 6% Travel Credit is not the same as 6% cash back because it must be used on a future eligible Booking.com reservation.
- The merchant name alone does not guarantee coding; the final reward depends on how the transaction posts.
$1,000 Booking.com example
A qualifying stay booked in the Booking.com app earns $60 in future Travel Credits on the Booking.com card. Wells Fargo Autograph earns 3,000 points; at 1¢ each, that is $30. Sapphire Preferred earns 2,000 Ultimate Rewards points; at a realistic 1.5¢ each, that is also $30. An unused Sapphire Reserve travel credit can still outweigh all three until the credit is exhausted.
Questions people actually ask
Does Booking.com count as travel on a credit card?
Often, but the exact result depends on the card's category definition and how the charge posts. Wells Fargo explicitly includes travel agencies and discount travel sites in Autograph's 3× travel category, while Sapphire Preferred generally earns 2× on other travel.
Does Chase Sapphire Reserve earn 4× on Booking.com?
Ordinarily no. Reserve's 4× hotel category requires booking directly with the hotel. Its annual travel credit may still apply to an eligible Booking.com charge.
Will I earn hotel points and elite credit through Booking.com?
Often not. Major hotel programs commonly limit points, elite-night credit, and status benefits on third-party bookings, so compare the Booking.com price and card rewards with the value of booking direct.
