The short answer

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey is a strong brand-neutral choice for direct hotel stays at 5×. Capital One Venture X can be better for travelers comfortable using its portal because it earns 10× on portal hotels and includes a $300 annual portal credit. Loyal guests should compare those flexible options with the card from the hotel chain they actually use.

What to use—and when

Best for brand-neutral direct stays

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey

Earns 5× when a purchase codes as a hotel or motel, compared with a lower rate for travel agencies and discount travel sites. Its annual fee is $95.

Best premium portal strategy

Capital One Venture X

Earns 10× on hotels booked through Capital One Travel and includes a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit. Use it only when the portal's room price and terms are competitive.

Best for a loyal guest

Card for your preferred hotel chain

A matching Hyatt, Hilton, or Marriott card can win when its annual free night, status, direct-property credits, and hotel points are worth more to you than the fee.

Decision rules

  • Compare the same room, taxes, resort fees, cancellation policy, and support path—not just the headline multiplier.
  • If you repeatedly use one chain, value its annual free night, status, and usable credits before comparing ordinary earning rates.
  • Use a flexible direct-booking card when you switch brands; use a portal card only when its price and restrictions remain competitive.
  • Convert every reward currency to a conservative personal value because hotel and bank points are not interchangeable.

Common traps

  • Third-party bookings can lose hotel points, elite-night credit, room-upgrade treatment, and other status benefits.
  • Hilton Surpass's property credit is divided into separate quarterly amounts rather than one unrestricted annual credit.
  • Annual free-night awards carry category or point caps, expiration dates, and sometimes leave resort fees or incidentals unpaid.
  • A portal's 10× does not automatically beat 5× direct after point values, hotel rewards, status recognition, and cancellation terms are included.

Portal points versus direct-booking value

A portal may advertise twice the card multiplier, but direct booking can also earn hotel points and elite credit and may simplify changes. Compare the complete dollar value of the same refundable room, then use the booking path with the greater total benefit—not the larger number alone.

Questions people actually ask

Is 10× through a portal automatically better than 5× booked directly?

No. Compare each point currency's value, the room price, any usable portal credit, cancellation terms, and the hotel points or elite benefits you may forgo. A smaller direct-booking multiplier can still produce greater total value.

Should I choose a flexible travel card or a hotel-branded card?

Use a flexible card when you switch brands or choose mainly by price. A hotel card is stronger when you consistently stay with one chain and naturally use its annual free night, status, and credits for more than the annual fee.
